40 Free Fun Things To Do At Night

After a long day at work, it’s nice to unwind and recharge by doing fun things instead of sitting at home and doing nothing!

It’s the perfect opportunity to spend time with friends and family, so in this article, we are going to look at some free fun things to do at night.

40 Free Fun Things To Do At Night

You may not have all of these options in your town. However, it’s safe to say you can do many of them.

Check out our list and even make your own list of the free things to do at night. You can grow your list based on what options are offered in your city or town.

1. Spa Night- Treat Yo Self to Self Care!

This can be on your own or with your loved ones – but a spa treatment is a perfect way to unwind after a long day at work.

It doesn’t have to be expensive, and you can use things that you already have.

Gather up all of your spa goodies like face masks and exfoliators. Set the scene by safely lighting some smelly candles and having a hot bath.

It may be nicer to recreate a real spa experience with other people, as you can give each other facials and massages, but even on your own, you can still create a nice spa experience.

2. Break Out The Board Games

A board game night is always perfect in my book, and it’s something we tend to forget about as adults.

But we are all children at heart and love to play games!

There are so many different kinds of board games that you can play depending on your mood and how much time you have. We have a few suggestions, but there are so many to choose from!

We love board games such as:

3. Try Out New Hobbies

What is more fun than trying out a new hobby?

There are so many different hobbies that you can try, whether that be inside the house or outside, on your own or with others. Some you need equipment for, or you can take classes, but some are free!

Some examples of new hobbies that you can try out include:

  • Playing a new sport
  • Zumba dancing
  • Learning a language
  • Painting or other crafts
  • Writing a book
  • Paddleboarding, kayaking, and more!

4. Create Your Ultimate Bucket List

We don’t know about you, but we absolutely love planning for the future!

It creates excitement in our lives and it’s always good to have something that you are working towards.

Your bucket list doesn’t have to be the most extravagant things that you can think of- you can try things like a pottery class or making a new friend.

And don’t forget a few lofty goals, like going on special trips – we recommend checking out Airbnb and Tripadvisor for some interesting places to go!

5. Get The Gang Together

Have a lazy night with friends, and take some time to reconnect.

Plan in advance if you wanna do something like an outdoor movie, have a fancy charcuterie night, or even just have drinks around a fire pit.

6. Create a Movie Theater Experience at Home

You don’t need to have a fancy theater set up at home to have a movie theater experience (although obviously, that would help!).

Get some popcorn, choose one of your favorite films, and get all snuggled up on the couch. Maybe recreate your childhood and make a pillow fort to relax in!

If you are having a movie night with your kids then they could create movie tickets for you all.

7. Get The Fire Pit Roaring

Do you have a fire pit or something similar?

Sitting around a fire after a day of work is a great free way of having fun, especially when it’s cold outside.

You can make s’mores, a classic, or have a small cookout at nighttime and watch the stars!

8. Do A Tailgate at Home

Do you love Super Bowl parties?

Well, who said that they have to be limited to only the Super Bowl!

Some tailgating is a special treat for some families, but why not make a big deal of a game when your team is up against their rival?

Invite your friends, get some grub and turn the game on – try and create an at-home Super Bowl atmosphere!

9. Visit Somebody

Sometimes after a long day at work, you just need some friendly human interaction- sometimes just to rant about your day, but also to get some good feelies from seeing someone you love.

Head over to a friend’s house instead of heading right home- whether you’ve got an hour or a few hours free. Just spend an evening somewhere different to brighten your mood.

10. Get Some Financial Pointers

A smiling family saves money with a piggy bank. Happy family at the table in the room with a great money mindset.

We obviously love talking about improving your finances, but it can truly lead to living a much happier life. It may not scream “Yay!” to you, but planning and funding your future is a great way to spend an evening!

To start with, you can create a budget to make sure that you are managing your money well.

After that, it’s time to make a plan for what you want to do with your money, such as setting up investments, paying off debt, and saving for the future.

11. Have a Theme Night

We sometimes wish holidays were more than one day (or month) a year!

You can do this with just the family or some friends, keep it low key or blow it up, but why not do something special for dinner?

You could do a Summer-ween event and get dressed up in crazy costumes, have special cocktails, and hilarious zombie finger foods.

Maybe a renaissance or movie madness party is more your style? Pick any theme your heart desires-maybe even host something once a month to entertain yourselves and your loved ones!

12. Become A Meal Planning Genius

Meal planning is something that will make your life so much easier.

Try out crockpot, freezer meals, and more.

Use those kitchen gadgets that have been hanging out forever!

13. Go Stargazing

Stargazing is something that we think everyone needs to do more of and one of my favorite ideas.

We can get so caught up in our lives and the hustle and bustle and stress of it all – but nothing makes all of that fall to the wayside more than looking at the stars.

14. Declutter Your Life- And Make Money For It

This may not sound like the most fun thing to do after work ever, but decluttering is so addictive once you get started!

We are all guilty of having too many things in our home, and it’s time to get them under control. Why not donate or make money flipping your stuff?

You can start with going through bulky items, perhaps in your garage, and selling on sites like Facebook Marketplace, or even by having a yard sale.

15. Play Puzzle Games or Do Puzzles

There are so many different types of puzzles that you can do, either by yourself or with your loved ones.

Besides puzzles, you could try out some puzzle games like Rubik’s cubes, tongue twisters, and more- they can be more entertaining than just puzzles!

16. Join The Downtown Life

Something that’s always fun to do after work is head downtown, check out the city, and take in the atmosphere for some people watching or just a quiet evening out.

17. Onesie Wonderland

If you don’t have a onesie in your life, you should get one ASAP!

There are so many cool or comfortable ones, and having a onesie night- with yourself or friends- is the perfect way to relax at night!

18. Get Scrapbooking

If you’re anything like me, you may pull out old albums and think about all the photos you have now that need a good home.

Now is the chance to get your photo albums together and do some fun scrapbooking! Get a little artsy while you reminisce about the good times.

19. Reminisce and Visit The Past

Was there anywhere you used to go a lot as a kid with your family or with friends during your younger days?

Why not revisit and have a little reunion to celebrate the good times!

20. Movie Marathon

There are so many trilogies, remakes, even sequels you’ve never heard of- why not movie marathon a series you haven’t seen?

Or make it a comedy, rom-com, or horror film night- pick your favorites in the category and get your popcorn and candy supplies ready!

To make it even better, you could even decorate for a themed movie night to make it even more fun for a Saturday night.

21. TV Binge Night

Sometimes, you just need to have a binge session of your favorite TV show! You can do this either by yourself or get your friends over to watch a boxset that you all like.

22. Candlelit Dinner

A candlelit dinner is a great date night idea for you!

Or if it’s just you, you deserve a fancy dinner- get dressed up and enjoy a nice bottle of wine.

Do something simple or cook a dish that you’ve been wanting to try out.

23. Host a Potluck Party

It’s nice to have people come over, but also a little expensive.

A potluck is a great way for everyone to contribute, and even make a party have more interesting food!

24. Play an Outdoor Game

When was the last time you played washers or cornhole?

Did you get to play these while camping or at the park for reunions as we did?

25. Go Camping!

Camping on a budget

You can camp in your own yard, at a friend’s place, or even spring for a night at a campground.

26. Check the Libraries for Fun

Libraries are perfect to explore new books or movies at no cost, but they sometimes have other programs or just a fun play area for the kids.

27. Find A Free Concert

Have a look at what is on in your local area and set up a date with your friends to go to a free concert.

This is a perfect evening activity, especially in the summer months.

There are so many things that you can do to exercise after work, and it’s so good for you!

How about Zumba, dance videos online, going for a walk?

Do you still struggle with dinner plans? Or is there a cool meal you’ve always wanted to make?

Make a special night to try something new in the kitchen!

Organizing the house is something that you can do after work, and it will make you feel better waking up the next day with it all under control.

Although it can’t all be achieved in one evening, it’s not a bad idea to get cracking!

31. Redecorate!

We tend to think of redecorating as a big project, but why not do it a little bit after work?

Breaking up all the changes you want to make will be easier on you!

You can pick a room at a time and head on over to Pinterest to get some ideas.

32. Take A Hike and Visit a Park

Go to a national or local park, it would be so nice after a long day at work – you could do sunset hikes!

Best of all, why not pack up a picnic or a snack to enjoy on your walk?

33. Have a Picnic in the Yard

Or the living room carpet, we aren’t gonna judge, but the yard has a little less cleanup in my opinion. But you can stay in and pop on a show or play a game while you eat.

34. Volunteer

This is a really cool way to spend your time after work. What could be better than giving back to your community?

35. Develop A New Skill

We can all get stuck in the cycle of endless working, but a great part of life is learning and trying out new things.

Think about what you have wanted to learn but haven’t had the time to do before. We think that we need a large amount of time to do a new skill, but we can do little bits each night.

36. Clean Up A Bit- But Make It Fun!

Get the music blaring, get into a Tom Cruise-worthy outfit, and get to a less risky business while you do some cleanup.

37. Get a Head Start on The Holidays

Even if it’s nowhere near holiday time, we like to be organized, and this is also a great way to spread the costs instead of being hit with a large amount of money going out at once.

If you know when the holidays are, you can plan and get some gifts to store ready.

38. Make Extra Cash At Home

A really productive thing to do after work is to try and make some extra cash. There are so many different ways to do this, with some of our favorites being:

Starting a blog is one of the best things that we’ve ever done! It’s something that we always like to recommend, whether as a business or hobby.
