These fun spring literacy activities for preschoolers are just what you need to keep your students engaged in learning and fun as the school year comes to an end. They’re all excellent additions to your list of spring preschool activities!
As the end of the school year approaches, it seems like more and more is added to our plates, right? But we still want to provide fun and meaningful activities and lessons for the kids. If your plate is starting to overflow, let me help you out with some spring ideas! That way, some of the planning onus is taken off your (very long) to-do list.
In that vein, I’ve collected a variety of spring literacy activities for preschoolers to play and learn with. Having a list of relevant activities on-hand helps me on the days when I feel like I’m running out of ideas. Hopefully this list will help you out, too! Spring Literacy Activities for Preschoolers
Spring is such a fun time of year, especially with preschool children. There are so many interesting topics they want to learn about. The first thing that comes to mind when I think of spring is the unpredictable weather. The forecast can have warm sunny days, snow flurries, and downpours of rain – all in one week! Or does that only happen where I live now?!
Aside from the weather, spring is a good time for preschoolers to learn about how plants grow, flowers, the lifecycle of a frog, bees and pollination, baby animals, bugs, the lifecycle of a butterfly, rainbows, and so much more. In my opinion, it’s the best time of year to learn about the great outdoors. And all of that learning and fun becomes ten-fold when the weather is nice enough for the kids to get outside and explore!
So immerse your class in nature this spring with these spring literacy activities. I’ve broken the ideas down into categories so you can find what you need easier – rainbows, flowers, insects, and Earth Day.
Rainbow Literacy Activities
Let’s kick things off with rainbow-themed spring literacy activities for preschoolers. All those colors are engaging for young children, and they bring a nice pop of brightness to dreary spring days.
Students are sure to get excited to learn their letters with the read-write-build alphabet printable, complete with rainbows and perfect for spring!
Celebrate the beginning of spring with some gold coin alphabet activities centered around a rainbow rice sensory bin.
Let the children get creative as they illustrate their “I See a Rainbow” book. It’s an excellent preschool color activity where the kids will have a chance to practice some early literacy skills. Plus, they get such a kick out of the rainbow their book pages make!
Students will have a chance to learn about letter sounds they spring into the rainbow hop letter sound game. And it gets them moving as they learn.
The rainbow name puzzle will be a fan-favorite with your students this spring! You can definitely adapt it for sight words, as well.
The rainbow sight word lacing busy bag is a great literacy activity to use all spring. I love that it basically only needs two materials but keeps the children interested for quite some time.

Spring Flower Literacy Activities
We can’t talk about spring literacy activities for preschoolers without touching on flowers, right? Spring is the season of regrowth, so delving into how flowers and plants grow is a must. Depending on where you live, you might have flowers blooming all over the place, leading to a lot of preschooler questions!
Leap into spring with our free counting flowers printable book! Students reinforce their understanding of the directionality of print as they practice sight words alongside some important early math concepts.
The 10 Little Flowers preschool song and cutouts are the perfect addition to your circle time song rotation this spring. You can add movements to go along with the song, too.
Grow a classroom alphabet flower garden. Then, let the kids pick flowers and create some beautiful word bouquets! Start with the children’s names, then move onto sight words or spring-themed words.
Pair some spring-themed manipulatives with the spring flower roll and cover mats, perfect for practicing beginning sounds!

Bug Literacy Activities
Here are some buggy spring literacy activities for preschoolers. Because I know you have at least some kids that are super into creepy-crawlies. Or maybe a few who are so enamored with all things butterflies! Like I mentioned with our flower ideas, spring is the season of regrowth. And learning about insect and bug life cycles fits well within that.
Get the children excited to learn preschool literacy concepts by letting them explore their senses while they work on printable ladybug letter puzzles!
The children will love getting to use a novel craft material as they build their names in any one of our name butterfly craft activities!
Spring into syllables with a fine-motor sensory activity that can be used to teach a variety of early literacy skills.
Spring is the perfect time for the kids to create and publish their very own butterfly life cycle printable book. And they’ll get to practice so many early reading skills in the process!
Teach a lesson on recycling as you repurpose some plastic Easter eggs and recycle an old egg crate to create the caterpillar name activity for preschoolers.
Stay inside and work on the I See Bugs printable emergent reader. It’s a great way for kids to explore and identify a variety of bugs on those rainy spring days.
Print out the ladybug alphabet match activity. Then, students will add spots to their ladybugs as they practice matching upper and lower case letters.
Earth Day Literacy Activities for Preschoolers
Finally, we have some Earth Day ideas to add to your collection of spring literacy activities for preschoolers. April 22 is Earth Day, and that’s right smack in the middle of spring. So if you’re looking for a few ideas, I’ve got you covered.
Let the kids dig through the Earth Day sensory bin to find letters. Pair the sensory bin with some spring-themed cloud words so the students can practice building words!
Encourage your students to work on their fine motor skills as they use this Earth Day letter match activity.
Kids love dice games of all sorts, so this Earth Day roll and write game will definitely keep them engaged.
An Earth Day song for preschool is a must, too! Songs and fingerplays let children work on language and vocabulary development, all while singing and having a blast.
And be sure to read some Earth Day books for preschoolers while you’re at it. I’m a big fan of incorporating books into everything we’re learning about.

Now that you’ve got an arsenal full of spring literacy activities for preschoolers, it’s time to plan for the materials you’ll need.
When it comes to materials, there are some themes I like to stick with depending on the time of year. For instance, I like to keep materials with warmer tones in the front of my supply closet for fall, and cool-colored supplies for winter. Spring is the time of year when I like to use bright colors as well as pastels. And it’s always important to have a variety of textures readily available.
